Whether your hosting a Halloween party, packing a school lunch, or packing some treats for a school Halloween party -YOU CAN AVOID THE CANDY MONSTER!

There are tons of healthy snack ideas that are fun, spooky and candy free!

In fact, you can host an entire Halloween party with CLEAN food! Yes I said it... CLEAN, HEALTHY, FUN, SPOOKY AND TASTY FOOD!

So many people have this miss understanding that healthy foods are boring, and don't taste good.  Almost like they will miss out on life if they eat healthy.  This is one of the biggest lies!

Healthy food can be exciting! Fun and very tasteful! You just have to learn to make them that way!

So here are some great ideas for HALLOWEEN- to keep it candy free- and still spooky, fun and tasty!!!

Have fun with fruits and Veggies!!
Make these monster mouthed by cutting an apple wedge and then wedge the other side.  Full with peanut butter and use almond slivers for teeth.

Make spooky ice pops with puréed fruit!
Ad monster eyes with dried apple rings, apricots and raisins.

Make a real fruit snack o lantern by hollowing out a naval orange and filling with mixed cut fruit.

Make some spooky banana frozen ghosts with either white chocolate or Greek yogurt!

Or simple bananas with chocolate chips pressed in to make eyes and mouth. And a clementine with a piece of a celery stalk

Make fruit cabins with googly eyes glued to the end.
Create a veggie monster with cut up vegetables..... Or maybe even a cat!!!

Use veggie dip or black bean dip for the cats head!

Cut up a melon to create this creepy brain!

Don't forget of course your pumpkin seeds! Roast them with any seasoning you would like! I like old bay seasoning or honey and cinnamon!

Here is a delicious pumpkin dip that you can put right back into the pumpkin to serve!! Use gluten free, cinnamon pita chips, natural crackers and cookies, and fruit to dip!

Carve out spooky fingers from mozzarella sticks for a great snack!

Or you can make some green deviled egg eye balls!!
You can either dye the yolk or use mashed avocados !!

I hope you enjoyed some of these fun ways to enjoy Halloween without
all the sugar and processed foods!

You can create whole wheat monster sandwiches as well!

Have a Happy and Safe Halloween!!!

love, The DeSanzo's

Fit and Healthy Pregnancy

How to have a fit and healthy 1st Trimester

Here are my current 11 week pregnancy "bump photos."

Fit and Healthy Pregnancy, Fit Pregnancy, Fearless and Fit, Amie DeSanzo, Pregnant, Eat Clean, Workingout during pregnancy, Healthy eating during pregnancy, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin A, Baby bump, 11 weeks pregnant, abs, working out with pregnant

Ok so you may not see a "bump" per say. But the reason why I am sharing this, is to show you the importance of eating clean and working out pre pregnancy!

When you are able to be in shape before you get pregnant, your muscles contain keep shape for much longer. Some people may not care about this... but this is a great way to avoid stretch marks! When your belly grows so fast, your skin does not have time to slowly stretch out.. instead it causes marks- aka stretch marks.
Also when you have strong abdominal muscles, you will be able to avoid many pregnancy pains, as your muscles and ligaments will hold the baby up stronger, and protect your back.  It will also aid in the delivery of your baby, and you will be able to bounce back to your  pre pregnancy body much faster!

so how do we maintain these muscles and "figure" during pregnancy?
It is through continued exercise and clean eating.
Today I want to talk about nutrition. I will post later on the fitness side!

Eating properly during pregnancy can be a tricky thing!

Many woman tend to take the EATING FOR 2 literally and eat double the amount of what they used to eat... hence all the added weight gain!
Did you know the healthy weight to gain during pregnancy is only 18-30 lbs! If you start out under weight they want you to gain more.
Based on my BMI, they recomend I gain 25-35 lbs.. honestly in my opinion I think that's even too much, because I was at a healthy weight prior to getting pregnant...  Yet many woman even far exceed this!!!!

my BMI is 19.4
aka starting weigh 120 and height at 5'6

Here is the break down.....

So Eating for 2 is not supposed to mean double the amount of food you are shoveling into your mouth and let loose!!!
Eating for 2 refers to the fact that we need to INCREASE certain vitamins and minerals in our bodies, along with being extra cautious and aware of what we are putting into our bodies.
See -we don't only have ourselves to account for... we are feeding a fragile little baby as well!
When your baby is born are you going to pump her with sugary foods like cakes, ice creams and donuts? or are you going to take caution and feed her only the best of the best! Breast feed if you can, and then use the best baby foods if you don't make your own to ensure the health and safety of your baby??

If you WOULD NOT feed your baby donuts right out of the womb... then I do not suggesting consuming them on a regular basis being pregnant either!
Everything you PUT INTO YOUR BODY... GOES INTO YOUR BABIES!!!

So yes, eating healthy needs to start now! If you have not been eating right prior to your pregnancy... it is time to re-evaluate the situation and do what is best for not only your child, but your own health!!! Your baby is going to need a healthy mama to take care of her... so Learn the basics and learn to eat the RIGHT foods for your new pregnant body!

Most pregnant women need to consume more protein along with more of certain vitamins such as folic acid, calcium and iron.  We also need a bit more calories- in the second and third trimester, to increase our energy.
In the second trimester we need an extra 300 calories a day and in the third about 450.  (this is in proportion to a person who is already starting out at a healthy weight and on a healthy diet!)

If you don't know how many calories you should be eating, click HERE.
To maintain my weight I need to be eating 2026 (since I am not currently working out intensely) .
So when I enter my second and third trimester I will just add those extra  HEALTHY calories needed.

Remember not all calories are created equal!!

Here is a perfect example...
Be wise about how you consume those 400 calories!

(remember pregnancy is not a time to cut calories or try to lose weight!!! You have all the time after the baby is born to do so! )

In pregnancy the First trimester can really be difficult sometimes. I know first hand all too well the woahs of morning sickness or shall I say all day sickness! ----- NOT FUN!

I am currently 11 weeks, with my 3rd child.. and still battling morning sickness! This can really make it difficult to eat the right things or even eat at all!!!

Which is why it is super important to take a good prenatal, especially if your not getting the proper nutrients through your diet!!!
Here is what I take...

Before I was pregnant I really did not eat a lot of starchy carbs. My diet many consisted of fruits, veggies, nuts and meat/protein.  I had maybe a serving or two of starchy carbs a day, but that was it.
Being sick, it seems like all your stomach can handle is starchy carbs!

So here is what I do....
First thing in the morning I make sure to eat a healthy breakfast (because I tend to get sick after ).  I have found that if I eat right away, my stomach does not get as upset.
Also eat small frequent meals throughout the day.
My breakfast will either be something like over night oats or Eggs wih a piece of whole wheat (no high fructose) toast.

As soon as I start to feel nauseated I will make my Rooiboost tea.
This helps to ease the nausea.  When I don't feel like I can eat anything but toast, then that's what I do. I eat whole wheat or Eziekiel bread.
 Or some whole wheat crackers.

I keep my options HEALTHIER, even though I may be consuming more of them than normal.

When I feel good enough, I use this time to pack in the nutrients!!! Steamed veggies, salads, fruits, nuts... I try to make everything I put in my mouth nutritious.   This way I know our baby is getting what he/she needs!

Here are a few charts to go by to make sure your getting the right nutrients...

Here are some foods loaded with protein.. you may be surprised as to which ones have the most!

Here are foods high in Iron

And foods high in Calcium...

**NOTE** To increase absorption, do not eat calcium along with foods high in iron, pair foods high in vitamin C along with foods high in Iron, so that it is fully absorbed!

I hope this will help you have a healthy pregnancy!

I will be updating my blog for other health advice and pregnancy info :)

Why the Scale Goes Up When You Start a New Workout Plan

How many of you have been discouraged by the number on the scale when you first start working out again?!?!?!?!

There are so many people that as soon as they start a new workout plan that obsess over the scale! I have to admit I WAS ONE OF THEM!!

Have you ever done this?
My thought process is....  I am so excited that I have started this new program, and I am finally on track and so first thing after the gym or every morning you hop on that scale and it either doesn't budge or you see it go up slightly.  You feel discouraged and frustrated and left not understanding why!

Many people will even quit their programs for this exact reason.  However, its not because your actually gaining weight! Chalene Johnson (which by the way I LOVE HER!!!!) wrote an amazing article that is below for you all to read.  I want you to understand the concept of WHY you  may gain some weight first as you begin a new workout program.
Do NOT give up!!! The weight gain will be temporary! So stay off the scale for the first couple weeks and judge by non scale victories!

- The way you feel
- What you see in the mirror.......

"Probably the most common question I get when I release a new exercise program is, "Help! I'm gaining weight! Am I doing something wrong?" This is a common phenomenon with any new exercise program, such as Turbo Kick, Turbo Jam, Hip Hop Hustle, or others! It's especially common (and temporary) with intense strength training programs like ChaLEAN Extreme or Tony Horton's P90X.

The motivation to start a new exercise program is almost always to lose weight. However, what most personal trainers know--and most at-home exercisers do not--is that a new exercise program often can cause an immediate (and temporary) increase on the scale. (Notice I didn't say weight gain! I'll explain.) This common increase in the scale is also the reason why perhaps millions of people start and then quickly quit their resolution to get fit.

The temporary weight gain explained:
When someone starts a new exercise program, they often experience muscle soreness. The more intense and "unfamiliar" the program, the more intense the muscle soreness. This soreness is most prevalent 24 to 48 hours after each workout. In the first few weeks of a new program, soreness is the body trying to "protect and defend" the effected or targeted tissue. Exercise physiologists refer to this as delayed-onset muscle soreness, or DOMS.

This type of soreness is thought to be caused by tissue breakdown or microscopic tears in muscle tissue. When this happens, the body protects the tissue. The muscle becomes inflamed and slightly swollen due to fluid retention. This temporary retention of fluid can result in a 3- to 4-pound weight gain within a few weeks of a new program. Keep in mind that muscle soreness is not necessarily a reflection of how hard you worked. In fact, some people feel no signs of muscle soreness, yet will experience the muscle protection mechanisms of water retention and slight swelling.

Most people are motivated enough to put up with this temporary muscle soreness. Yet, many, especially those who really need immediate weight loss to keep them motivated, become discouraged and quit!

When I worked with a group of 70 test participants during the development stages of ChaLEAN Extreme, this happened. Who was the most upset and discouraged? You guessed it... the women! I'm happy to report absolutely for every single woman (and man) in our group, the weight increase was temporary and never lasted more than two weeks before they started to see a major drop in the scale. However, these people had the advantage of working with someone who was able to explain to them why this was happening and assure them the weight would come off if they stuck to the nutrition plan and stayed true to the program.

If you follow a multi-phase exercise plan, such as ChaLEAN Extreme, keep in mind that when you start each phase, your body will be "in shock" again. Don't be surprised or discouraged if you experience a temporary gain on the scale the first week of each phase.

My own personal example of this is running 10Ks. I don't do it very often, maybe once or twice a year. Even though I run on a regular basis, when you run a race, you push much harder. It's natural for me to be insanely sore the next day. It’s also very common for me to see the scale jump 4 pounds the next day from forcing fluids post race and the resulting DOMS. Even though I know the cause of it, it's still a bummer. We're all human and hard work should mean results. Hard work equals results, but our bodies are amazing machines and they know how to protect us from hurting ourselves. Soreness forces you to give those muscles a break. Ultimately you will lose the weight and you will change your metabolism in the process.

The key is understanding that this is a normal and temporary and stick with the program! "

DONT GIVE UP.. NEVER GIVE UP!!!!! Remember the scale is only one of many other victories in a weight lost journey!!!

DO NOT LET THE SCALE DEFINE YOU!!!!!!

Egg and Sausage Casserole

EGG & SAUSAGE CASSEROLE

My mom made this egg casserole all growing up (and still does) for all of our special holidays we spend together! I cant say I have ever gotten sick of it! We always look forward to our egg casserole, blueberry muffins and orange juice!
Because we love this recipe so much- and it was slightly "dirty"- I decided to clean it up so it had less processed foods, less fat, and less sodium.

Clean Egg Casserole

My mom usually would just use a can of mushroom soup- which I now have a home made recipe for and she would use the Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage ground pork.

We have a retreat comeing up this weekend for us Beachbody coaches on the Dream Team (WAHOO!) so I decided this would be a perfect dish to bring! However my moms recipe didn't cut it ;)

How to become FEARLESS

Its time to get to know ME!
I feel compelled to share a little more about myself, since I mostly just post health and fitness tips. So here it goes.. My first HONEST AIM- post!

HOW I BECAME FEARLESS

Growing up I was a church kid, who grew up with strong Christian beliefs and moral. I had my own rebellious stage starting in High school and kind of bounced back and forth as I got closer to college.  In 2005 I went to Temple University to play field hockey and study photo journalism (both passions of mine) on a scholarship and I was on top of the world!

I had made a ton of great friends, on and off the team, and was so excited to reach new goals and heights while being at Temple University.

The first week we moved into our dorms, I met the star QB of the football team, who lived right down the hall! We became close friends and he slowly wooed me over... haha.
We began dating that first year of college.  That summer, going into our sophomore year my he had decided to transfer schools.  He was going to be 6 hours away! Which was a total bummer, but we were going to try and make it work. We spent a lot of time together that summer... apparently too much time (haha)... because the week before I was supposed to leave to go back to school, for preseason, we found out I was pregnant!

I can't describe to you how in that moment of finding out, how a flash of my life went before my eyes. No I wasn't dying... but it felt like I might as well! In that moments, days, weeks and months afterwards I felt like an absolute screw up, failure, like my dreams were shattered, my career was over!

Everything I was working towards was all crushed.  Not to mention I was just TERRIFIED!!! What was I going to do!? My boyfriend and I were in no place to get married, let alone even think of it! How was I going to finish up school? I didn't have a job, how would I be able to pay for a child? How can I have a child, when I was still one, myself!!!! All of these thoughts haunted me for months, being down and upset and full of regrets.

My relationship with my parents went from great to horrible! I could no longer play field hockey and After finishing up my third semester at Temple pregnant I had to leave to go home.  I knew i was the talk of the town, and I knew certain people were routing against me-waiting for   me fail!

I felt all alone, lost and confused.  How could this have happened to me!!? I felt as though I not only disappointed myself and my family but I was the town screw up! I had trouble sleeping and would often wake up with panic attacks.  My days at work were busy, but usually ended up in crying  in between jobs and when I was in the office alone.

My relationship with my boyfriend only got worse and we eventually broke up, a little over a month before our son Braden was to be born.

During this time, although it was probably the lowest point in my life.... I realized that God was not abandoning me.  God promises his people a future, blessings and hope.  No matter what was going to happen, I knew I would be ok!  As I studied my bible and prayed more and more I came into a new light, I really became a new person.  I had new hopes, new dreams, and new strength that I had never felt before.

I finally realized, EVERYONE has bumps in the road.  A bump/ detour in the road, does not mean you cannot get to your desired destination.  The detour may not be your desired path because it most likely is more difficult... The road may be unpaved, and it might be filled with pot holes and lots of sharp curves, but you can still get there!

My dad has always told me.... do NOT let a situation dictate who you are, what you will do, or where you will go!

My dad sails, and he made sure to always relate sailing to life.  And how true it is.... because throughout a regatta/ race, the wind can shift multiple times.  In a split second you need to analyze the new direction of the wind and come up with a new way to get to the end point.  You may zig zag way out of the way, because of the direction of the wind, but that is how you have to get there! You have to adjust your sails to the direction of the wind in order to reach your destination.

So although this was not my desired path, being pregnant at 19 without a job, or degree...I knew I could still ultimately reach my goals of finishing college, providing for my son and being successful.
You can either let a bad situation break you, or you can make yourself stronger through it!
 It is your choice !

So that is what I decided to do!!!! I was going to prepare for a bumpy road, and an often times not fun one...but I was going to rise above.

I worked two jobs and saved every penny up until my son was born.  My ex bf finally came around and started talking to me the week before Braden was born and decided to come out for his birth. I was not about to let him come strolling back into my life, so I kept a guard up for a while just seeing how things went and seeing if he would actually be in Braden's life.  At that point I was not really sure, especially with him living 6 hours away!

So I continued trusting God, working hard and living above our circumstance.  God told me over and over, DO NOT BE AFRAID!

The following year I went back to school to begin to finish up my degree!! That was the same year Joey moved out to NJ with my family (where he also finished up school) and stayed there for 2 years before we decided to get married.

We both graduated college with honors! A 4.0 and a (almost) 4 year old!!! Never in  a million years would I have thought I would graduate with a 4.0.... let alone a 4 year old. haha. But having Braden changed me.  I wanted to be the best I possibly could be FOR HIM! I wanted him to know and see that his Mama worked hard to not only provide for him, but to be all that I could be in all aspects of my life. To show him that anything is possible, and you can NOT let situations dictate your life!

I wanted him to go through life FEARLESSLY! and how could he do that if he didn't have an example of it!?

That doesn't mean situations may not be scary, but it means that you rise above... you push on and you give it your all!  You take steps forward without having all the answers... you figure it out as you go along, because if you stand still waiting for the perfect time to do things. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!

Everyone experiences detours in their lives, embrace them, learn from them, let them make you stronger and keep pushing forwards towards your goals and dreams!

And Remember you are never alone.  God promises that through Him, you can do all things. So no task is to great, no mountain is too tall---- GOD MAKES THIS ALL POSSIBLE!

Although the road has not been easy, and still has rough patches- God has blessed us beyond our wildest dreams.  At age 25 and 26 we have two beautiful children and another one on the way.  We are debt free! We both own our own businesses (along side of my husband having a full time job- which one day in the near future.... I am working towards him being able to retire!).

I am a stay at home mom, who is growing my business from the comforts of my own home, as well as not only being able to financially make ends meet, but have the rewards of helping other people! I absolutely love what I do, and I can not express to you how grateful I am for these opportunities the Lord has brought me!

I do not tell you this to TOOT my own horn.... because believe me, I am no where near where I want to be. I still have dreams that I want to fulfill and places I want to go in my spiritual life, home life and business life.

I share this because everyone has obstacles they have to overcome.  Sometimes in certain situations, in the moment, it may feel like the end of the world. You may want to give up, you  may throw in the towel and take the easy road. But I am telling you DONT! We were not made to live mediocre lives where we just exist. WE ARE MEANT TO LIVE!!!!!!

So although situations might get tough and you don't know the next steps or you don't know how things will turn out.... Trust God, evaluate your life, goals and dreams- look at the steps you need to take AND TAKE ACTION!

Remember, things don't JUST HAPPEN! yes God presents opportunities... they may be frightening and you may be unsure how they will turn out... but without your ACTION of moving forward, pursuing your dreams and working hard.... nothing will happen.
God does not call us to just sit and wait. He calls us to be hands on, to more forward without answers and to trust Him that he will take care of us along the way!

I never wanted to be a teen pregnancy statistic....

"Research shows that 61 percent of women who have children in community college don’t finish their degree, and less than two percent of teen mothers who have a baby before age 18 get a college degree by age 30."

I wanted more out of life... and its as simple as making a choice to rise above a situation and pushing forward. MAKE YOUR DREAMS BIGGER THAN YOUR PROGLEMS!

Adopt the attitude of .....

and eventually YOU WILL GET THERE!

My call to action for you is....

First evaluate your dreams and goals.

WRITE THEM DOWN

Figure out the next step you need to take and DO IT! (don't hesitate, don't wait.... do it now!)

GO NOW... take action and begin to live your life FEARLESSLY!!! Only YOU can create the life you want to live!
